21 Bistro

Located on the Quayside in the core of Newcastle, 21 supplies the ideal spot for a sumptuous meal and delicious drink. The restaurant came into being in 1988, when restaurateur/chef Terry Laybourne first flung open the doors to the general public. At the time, the Quayside was not quite the hip nerve centre it was to become: nonetheless, 21 – called 21 Queen Street at the time – flourished. Within just three years, Laybourne was rewarded for his efforts when the eatery claimed a prestigious Michelin star, in the process becoming one of the area’s most beloved fine-dining establishments. Rebranded in the mid 00s as Café 21, the venue would relocate to nearby Trinity Gardens, forming part of a coveted new enclave of eateries and bars close by the Law Courts. Repurposed as something of an upmarket bistro, Café 21 would win plaudits for its food and service, much as 21 Queen Street had before it. Indeed, Terry was named Independent Restaurateur of the Year and given an MBE for services to the hospitality industry. These days, the restaurant remains a staple of Newcastle’s foodie scene. Simple but stylish bistro cooking is the order of the day, with flavoursome dishes centred on fresh and seasonal ingredients. Don’t expect to be blindsided by artful tricks or style over substance: what you’ll get is sumptuous dishes like seared scallops with pea purée, bacon and black pudding; confit of duck with French beans, Lyonnaise potatoes, thyme and rosemary; and slow-cooked shoulder of beef in red wine, with glazed onions and carrots. Oh, and that’s not any old beef, incidentally: it’s Himalayan salt-aged beef traditionally reared on the Glenarm estate and aged for a bare minimum of 35 days. No wonder the fillet steak au poivre is to die for.
